Bespoke: The Object Jewelry Sale was held on December 9th. I think we may be jinxed as we always have snow storms forecasted on the day of the sale each year. This year the scare of a Blizzard canceled our sale after four hours of being open. The Union needed to close, so we were forced to shut down at 1:00. We did have a lot of traffic though and several people commented on the quality of the work and presentation. Those two things were the goals that I presented the students with at the beginning of the semester. Good to see that people noticed....

Thank you to everyone in the course for working so hard this semester. It's been a great time and I am so proud of you all!!

Please join the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee student Jewelry & Metalsmithing student organization on Wednesday, December 9th from 9:00am-8:00pm in the Union Concourse for Bespoke: The Object Jewelry Sale

The Annual Object Jewelry Sale will be held on December 9th in the Union’s Concourse at the University of Wisconsin-Milwuakee from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Students from the Jewelry and Metalsmithing Area in the Visual Art Department will present at least 500 pieces of jewelry and/or functional objects that are unique and sometimes outrageous in design but will all address the idea of the one-of-a-kind or “bespoke”. In a world that is based upon mass production and consumption, the need for the unique and individualized is essential. The one-off or bespoke object and bespoke experience becomes an outlet for the frustrations of conformity and likeness. Bespoke: The Object Jewelry Sale is an investigation into the bespoke object and the transformation of thought, material, process and product. Each student is responsible for the fabrication of 20-30 pieces including rings, pendants, brooches, earrings, etc. Using materials that range from silver and gold to nontraditional materials such as plastic and rubber, students create jewelry with an exciting twist. All the work will be available for sale in order to assist Object, a student-run metals organization, in support of their efforts to bring in visiting artists. Be sure to mark your calendar!

Here are some images hammers that I drew in my sketchbook and that I am planning on making. Remember, you are free to make as many hammers as you would like, think about your hammer(s) being a one of a kind object that represents you or your ideas in some manner. We will be displaying these in the annual Metals exhibition.

Wednesday we covered a lot of information about desktop machining. I showed you the lathe made by Sherline and I showed you the machines made by Taig.

I promote the Taig as it is built very well and is cost effective for those people who are just starting to machine. The nice thing about these machines are their compact, yet sturdy construction. With having them mounted on a board you can take them almost anywhere. Upon graduating with my first grad degree, Jill and I had just gotten married and were living in a small studio apartment. Many times after dinner, I would often clear the kitchen table and get my mill out of the closet and work on the table - of course making sure to clean up my chips when finished!

I later purchased and put my lathe together from parts. I ordered it and still order from Nick Carter. He has a simple yet effective website that explains a lot about the machines, contains a current price list, gives tips and info on using the machines, and has tons of pictures from current Taig users. He is a Taig dealer and has always had the best price on the machines and parts. He will match any price that you can find on the purchase of Taig tools.

Sarah wanted to scan a clay model that she made today, so we gave it a go. They scanned easily and then we decided to export directly to an "stl" without fussing with the file like you normally would if you were going to make a cad drawing from it. We printed the "stl" on the uPrint tonight and it tuned out great. It was cool to go from clay model directly to plastic part with no messing around. In the future, I'm going to have to do some more pieces in this manner. I was glad Sarah wanted to try this, as it was something I was curious about; and she got some plastic molars out of the deal.

As I mentioned, we had to give up the 3d printer and laser cutter. Steve, Christof, Sam, and Sarah were able to get some things made before giving it back though. We all learned a great deal and I'm anxious to see things materialize as these pieces become part of future work. Thanks to those of you who took the time to play around with this technology. It helped me learn a great deal and I thank you.

Steve made some acrylic discs that will be tapped in the center.
Sam etched some blue tinted acrylic with an original image that he drew (this may get colored LED's). Also it casts a great shadow when light is shown through it.
And Christof cut some tinted acrylic hexagons that are going to be a part of his messenger bag.

What a great time we had with visiting artist, Kim Cridler. Her workshops was great and her talk was even better (as if that could even be possible?). Our little metals community really came together in the creation of the piece you see above. Each student received a section of the design and then we all came together in the creation of the whole piece in a little under five hours.

We all owe Kim a huge thank you for her inspirational talk. You can see pictures from her visit here.

We love it when design students hold their own next to the big guys, and we're thrilled to report that the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Pratt Instituteand the Rhode Island School of Design presented stellar booths at this year's ICFF, all culminations of classes and workshops that focused on various aspects of contemporary design issues.

Cranbrook's exhibition, entitled Innate Gestures, came out of a semester long workshop, led by Scott Klinker and Leon Ransmeier, that focused on the nuance of the physical relationships between the body and the objects it interacts with, resulting in enigmatic products that demand an investigation of themselves by the user. For example, Jonathan Muecke describes his Heater as "a physical non object" and his Copper Step Stool as "an able bodied mass." Heater is tall, spatial and gently heated, inviting users to touch it, sit by it or lean against it for comfort. The Copper Step Stool is sized only for the ball of the foot, providing stability through its tripod base, and, by nature of its form, forcing the user to launch themselves upwards and only for a moment. While vague in function, the objects in this show are precise in material and character, leaving the interpretation of the interaction and use open to the user, and, in many ways, suggesting new uses, habits and spatial divisions in everyday life.

Pratt Institute's students operated within a much more quantifiable concept: Design for a Dollar, led by Professor Mark Goetz, encouraged students to explore the design and fabrication choices available to them when working with material costs that amounted to a dollar or less. The result is a diverse and clever collection of furniture and tabletop objects that illustrate the richness and complexity that design can bring to an object, even when the material value is low. For example, in the growing tradition of contemporary decorative arts, Catherine Merrick drips wax onto second-hand ceramic plates and sandblasts away the exposed area, resulting in a new method of decoration. Equally resourcefully (but a bit more utilitarian), Brian Persico laser cuts scissor components from used sawblades, resulting in a new, sharp object with the character and history of something already discarded. The transformations represented in the objects shown by Pratt were impressive -- each designer took steps to create something new from the scant materials they chose to work with.

An exploratory approach to materials governed the objects produced forRISD's exhibition. Immaterializing Material, taught by Lothar Windels, encouraged the students to choose an unorthodox material and conduct hands-on experiments in order to understand and make use of its properties. These investigations were then developed into the furniture and products displayed at ICFF. For example, the bubbly texture of Debra Folz's 100% Wax table comes from a manipulation of the way the wax is introduced into the mold, and, as a bonus, the whole thing can be remelted and used again. In contrast to this highly reproducible process, Andrew Mau's study of feathers led to the creation of his Perch Bowl, an unglazed ceramic bowl that is perforated with pheasant feathers, creating a soft and luxurious interior with hundreds of quills supporting the piece from its underside. The forms in this show reveal the insights discovered through the experiment of fabrication, and the hands-on approach is evident.

anodizing aluminum

Today we will begin anodizing and dying aluminum and then hopefully get to an introduction of using a manual lathe. I have included handouts on both topics in the content section of D2L for you to download and print out for the demonstrations. Remember I have additional info on anodizing in the content section on resists, etc for anodizing. There may be some addition information that you find interesting. It would be beneficial to add this information to your notebook. I have included information on the anodic coating of different alloys, details on the alloys themselves and the handout on anodizing and dying that I will go over in class.
